Eliminating the VOC problem

Industry has been under pressure to reduce its VOC emissions for some years, and an EU directive has banned their release into the atmosphere since the end of October 2007. Ehovoc has been in the business of helping companies meet this challenge since 1998, and its catalytic VOC incinerators are efficient in terms of both operational performance and costs.

Ehovoc’s focus on catalytic-based VOC (volatile organic compound) treatment reduces the reaction temperature in a unit by around 500 °C compared to thermal combustion, which requires an operating temperature in excess of 800 °C – saving on both energy and operating costs.

The lower temperature employed in catalytic incineration also means that the process does not generate by-products, such as NOx or carbon monoxide.

To ensure that its products remain at the cutting edge, Ehovoc works closely with the University of Oulu, as well as Ecocat, a leading Finnish supplier of catalytic converters.

A giant in everything but size

Ehovoc describes its Little Giant as an intelligent solution for VOC emissions for a number of reasons – not least because it packs completely automatic operations and high conversion efficiency into the smallest regenerative unit on the market today.

One Little Giant, available in nine standard sizes, can handle anything from 500 to 18,000 m3/h, and can adjust itself automatically to varying flow rates and VOC concentrations, while offering a conversion efficiency of up to 99.5% and very low operating costs. Maintenance costs are also low, thanks to the long-life catalyst used.

This catalyst features a new mixer type of metallic structure that enhances contact between the gas being treated and the catalyst, and has been developed by Ecocat. The precious metals used do not react easily with other materials, and high platinum and palladium loadings guarantee very good resistance to virtually all catalyst poisons.

The Little Giant also features a new type of specially developed regenerative heat exchanger. Manufactured from coated steel strip, it ensures very effective heat transfer between the gas and the metallic surface and offers a good balance between heat transfer and pressure loss. Efficiency can be as high as 96%, and, combined with the custom catalyst, it eliminates any need for additional energy input.

A PLC system enables a Little Giant to operate fully automatically. If required, a system can be started up or controlled remotely via a PC or mobile phone, and all alarm and process data is always accessible in the same way.

Ehovoc’s catalytic VOC incinerators are efficient in terms of both operational performance and costs, and are also significantly smaller than conventional thermal incinerators. More than 40 Little Giants – supplied in easy-to-install, 20-foot containers – are currently operational across European industry.
