Thanks to their modern technology, WinWinD wind turbines are capable of generating electricity efficiently even in low wind conditions – and are ideal for locations where high reliability and availability are important priorities.
Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in wind turbine development and expertise in wind turbine components and energy generation, the new generation of wind turbines from Winwind is based around advanced 1 MW and 3 MW units employing Multibrid® technology.
The 3 MW units, in particular, address the growing demand for high-output units capable of truly making wind power a force to be reckoned with on a larger scale, and feature a hub height of 100 metres and a rotor diameter of 100 metres.
WWD turbines are based on state-of-the-art technology, with an integrated power unit featuring a highly reliable planetary gear system and a slowly rotating generator. This approach combines the best features of direct drive and high-speed gearbox systems. The low rotational speed of the power unit ensures that they have a long life. Little maintenance is required, and any servicing that is needed can be carried out on-site, without the need for expensive equipment.
Maximising even low winds
Winwind emphasises the importance of offering solutions that provide the best yield over the entire life cycle of an installation. Many customers have appreciated this focus on life-cycle thinking, including ones in Bulgaria, China, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Portugal, and Sweden.
Eesti Energia in Estonia, for example, selected 3 MW units for the country’s largest wind park, at Aulepa; this will be somewhat larger than the Ajos site in northern Finland, which received its last units in autumn 2008. With 13 turbines, the Aulepa wind park will have a rated capacity of 39 MW and be capable of generating over 100 GWh of electricity annually when it is completed in 2009, eliminating the emission of 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
In the heart of Central Europe, two 3 MW units are generating an estimated 12,000 MWh of electricity annually at Pchery, north-west of Prague.
The success of the WWD-3 design has been further underlined by recent contracts for a 24 MW wind park at Aseri in Estonia and a 30 MW facility near Skellefteå in Sweden.
Major investment in the company
Abu Dhabi’s multi-billion dollar renewable energy and clean technology initiative invested €120 million in Winwind in September 2008, acquiring a significant equity stake.
Underlining the potential of the company’s technology and wind power generally, particularly in the utility area, the investment will provide a valuable springboard for further development.
